From 2013 to 2025: A Complete LED Sign Upgrade That Transformed Visibility and Saved Thousands

From 2013 to 2025: A Complete LED Sign Upgrade That Transformed Visibility and Saved Thousands

In 2013, wipath got the opportunity to design and install a full-colour LED signfor Strive Community Trust on Buckland Road, Māngere. The display served the organisation and its local community reliably for more than a decade. However, as technology advanced and LED resolutions improved dramatically, the client decided in 2024 to upgrade their existing display to a larger, sharper, and more energy-efficient version. What made this project particularly interesting was the challenge of fitting the new, larger LED screen into the existing timber post structure—a structure the client wanted to retain in order to keep costs down. This article highlights how our engineering team delivered a modernised upgrade without altering the original posts, ultimately saving the client thousands of dollars while dramatically improving display quality.

Background: The Original 2013 Installation

The original LED sign installed in September 2013 measured 2640mm wide × 1380mm high with a 16mm pixel pitch. At the time, 16mm resolution was widely used for outdoor signage and performed well for long-distance viewing.

The display was mounted on two round sustainably sourced timber posts, grounding the LED sign in nature. These posts were chosen for their simplicity, durability, and suitability for outdoor conditions. Over time, the sign continued to operate effectively, but technology evolved significantly — allowing for much sharper image quality and more efficient performance.

Client Requirements for the 2025 Upgrade

Strive Community Trust approached us with four clear objectives:

1. Upgrade to Latest LED Technology

The client requested a 3.91mm pixel pitch screen—an enormous leap forward in visual quality compared to their original 16mm display. This finer resolution ensures crisp, vivid visuals, even when viewed from close range.

2. Increase the Display Size

The organisation wanted their new sign to be slightly larger than the original to increase visibility and enhance the impact of their messages.

3. Retain the Existing Timber Posts

The timber posts installed in 2013 were still structurally sound. The client specifically asked us to reuse the same structure to avoid unnecessary replacement costs.

4. Ensure Easy Future Maintenance

Any upgraded design needed to provide simple and safe access for servicing, reducing long-term maintenance overhead.

The Challenge: Larger Screen, No Structural Changes

The new screen measured 2830mm × 1330mm, making it wider than the 2013 model. The challenge was:

1. How do we mount a larger, heavier LED screen using the same timber posts?

2. How do we avoid cutting, adjusting, or repositioning the posts?

3. How do we ensure strength, safety, and longevity with a larger structure?

4. How do we maintain easy access for servicing?

These constraints required a precise and innovative engineering solution.

Our Custom Solution

1. A Bespoke Mounting Frame

To fit the larger display into the space defined by the existing posts, our team designed a custom-built aluminum case. This solution:

1. Provided exact alignment with the current timber post spacing
2. Supported the increased size and weight of the 3.91mm LED screen
3. Required no modification to the posts
4. Ensured long-term structural stability

This approach alone helped the client avoid thousands of dollars in structural upgrades.

2. Improved Serviceability

We engineered the frame to allow technicians to easily:

1. Access internal components
2. Perform inspections
3. Carry out maintenance

This design reduces future service costs and downtime.

3. Seamless Integration

Although the screen is larger and significantly more advanced, it blends seamlessly with the original installation. The end result is a modern, clean, and visually impressive display with all structural elements working in harmony.

Installation Process

The upgrade process was carried out smoothly and efficiently:

1. The old 16mm LED screen was carefully removed.

2. The timber posts were inspected and confirmed fit for reuse.

3. The custom frame was securely mounted to the existing posts.

4. The new high-resolution 3.91mm LED sign, complete with a custom built aluminum case, was mounted to the existing timber posts.

5. Electrical and control systems were upgraded to match the latest standards.

6. The screen was configured, tested, and optimised for peak performance.
7. Throughout the installation, our team ensured minimal disruption to the site and completed the project safely and professionally.

Results and Benefits

1. Dramatically Improved Visual Quality

The new 3.91mm LED sign delivers exceptional clarity. Whether viewed from a few metres away or across the street, the display appears bright, sharp, and modern.

2. Increased Display Area

With a size of 2830mm × 1330mm, the sign offers more space for content, enhancing the organisation’s visibility and communication capabilities.

3. No Structural Alteration Required

Thanks to our custom design, the original timber posts remain intact—exactly as the client requested.

4. Significant Cost Savings

By reusing the existing structure, the client saved thousands of dollars they would otherwise have spent on new posts or ground works.

5. Future-Ready and Low Maintenance

The upgrade not only modernizes their signage but also ensures longevity, ease of servicing, and reduced long-term costs. The client expressed strong satisfaction with the outcome, impressed by both the engineering solution and the enhanced quality of the display.

Conclusion

This upgrade demonstrates the power of intelligent design and customised engineering. By understanding the client’s needs and constraints, we delivered an innovative solution that provided:

1. Advanced LED technology

2. A larger, higher-quality display

3. Long-term structural stability

4. Significant cost savings

5. A modern, community-focused digital sign

The transformation from the original 2013 installation to the 2025 upgrade highlights our commitment to performance, value, and client satisfaction. If you are considering an LED sign upgrade or a completely new installation, Wipath communications Ltd  is ready to deliver tailored solutions that combine engineering precision with practical value.
