Fire Pager
Coverage Expansion System Using Satellite
In this system the Fire
department normally dispatched fire calls to pagers using
a nationwide flex paging network.
In remote areas however the Flex network was
unable to provide coverage and as one of the
requirements for volunteer fire fighters to
be able to attend a fire call was that they
be within 5km of the fire station at the time
of the call it was decided to use local pocsag paging to
activate call outs.
WiPath installed a PDR2000 at
the satellite uplink which was within the coverage
are of the flex network. It received all paging traffic
on the flex network and encoded this in TNPP
before uploading the data stream to the satellite
data uplink.
At the remote fire stations
a standard TV set top decoder, programmed to
receive the data channel, received the data
and output this to a PDT2000 which
decoded the TNPP and re-encoded as pocsag which
it output to an FM transmitter. (Download
